How this tile calculator works
Different jobs are measured in different ways, so this calculator adapts to what you're tiling. You give the room's length and breadth once, and it works out the rest.
Floors (room & bathroom)
Floor area is simply length × breadth. Measure the two sides of the room, enter them, and the calculator divides by your tile size to get the tile count, then rounds up to full boxes.
Walls (room, bathroom & kitchen)
For walls you don't measure each wall separately. The calculator takes the room's perimeter — that's 2 × (length + breadth) — and multiplies it by the wall height you choose. That covers all four walls at once.
Kitchen walls — three ways to tile
Kitchens aren't always tiled the same way, so you get three options:
- Full walls — floor to ceiling on every wall (perimeter × height).
- Above counter only — the backsplash strip between the countertop and the cabinets, roughly a 2 ft band along the counter run.
- Above + below counter — the backsplash plus the area below the counter, about a 5 ft band along the counter run.
For the counter options you enter the counter run length — how many feet of wall the counter covers — instead of the whole room.
Why the answer is in boxes
Tiles are sold by the box, not the piece, so the calculator gives you boxes to buy. It works out how many tiles you need, adds your waste allowance, then divides by the pieces per box printed on your tile box and rounds up. Always keep one spare box from the same batch for future repairs — shades vary between production lots.
